To describe the joy that snowboarding brings me is tough. It’s tough because it’s something you have to experience and feel in order to really understand it. I first tried snowboarding when I was 12 and ever since then I was hooked. Of course, just like anything else, it took time and practice to get “good” but once I got to that point where I was good enough for it to be fun, there was no turning back. When I got to college I was fortunate enough to join the snowboard team my senior year and we had a house in Mammoth. My friend Nikki and I would drive 7 hours every weekend from San Diego to Mammoth. Might sound crazy to most people but not to me. So for someone who has never snowboarded before, what is it that would motivate us to spend ridiculous amounts of time (and gas) in a car trekking up and down the state of California every weekend? Apart from the obvious fun factors of going fast and the epic views, the most fun part of snowboarding, for me,  is riding with my friends. To me snowboarding is not an individual sport, it’s something I share with my favorite people in the world and that’s what makes it fun. You know when you were a kid and you rode bikes around town with the posse of neighborhood kids? Remember how fun that was? No rules, just you, your homies, your bikes and all the time in the world to explore and get into all sorts of adventures….well that is the same exact feeling I have when I’m on the mountain with my friends. It’s THAT feeling that makes snowboarding so fun for me.

So at this point in my life, I feel lucky to have found people that share this same passion as me and are willing to make the effort to RIDE. (insider tip, for cool points call it “riding” and not “boarding”…just trust me on this.) So last weekend I put together a trip to Mammoth Mountain with the MAHFIA crew (aka some of my favorite people in the world): Shelby Kantar, Melissa Marquardt, YuLin Olliver, Kim Kirch & Valerie Gee. Originally we went to check out the contest that Roxy was putting on but it was canceled due to weather. I’m not going to lie, that MADE our trip because that meant no schedule, just straight up time to ride. And ride we did. Although it was pretty windy, it had just dumped right before we got there so the snow was epic. When it comes to snow conditions, I don’t think I’m super picky. It has to be raining, icy or a complete white-out for me to call it quits. So if its not any of those things, I say game on. One of the things to keep in mind is that snowboarding is just like life — its what you make of it. If you go out there with a positive attitude and you take into consideration all the awesome things, you WILL have an amazing time. On the other hand, if you get caught up in the negatives — falling, being cold, etc, you’ll never enjoy it. Snowboarding is my metaphor for life. So if you’ve never tried it before and have the means to do it, I’d encourage you to put yourself out there, sign up for a lesson and just try it — it’s never too late to start living. Oh yeah, and bring your friends cause life ain’t worth living without friends to share it with.

I cruised out to Canyon Lake this past weekend to get a little GoPro session in with Melissa Marquardt and Shelby Kantar. We mounted the HD hero to a monopod and Daniel Doud rode doubles with the girls and filmed while I took pics from the boat. After a couple test runs, one really close call and a little Rain X love on the camera housing, we figured out the perfect set up and managed to get some really amazing footage. Check out the pics! We’ll be makin some magic with the video footage & droppin it a little later. Shout out to Matt Pierce for driving us and to Socal for the 70 degree weather in February. Hope you guys are finding some time to get your shred on, whether it be snow, wake, cement, surf, whatever…go out and get yours!

MAGIC AUG10 [REWIND] VIDEO

We linked up with @mayka from @moxsie to help shoot a couple interviews and we also cruised the show and said hi to the homies. We all love to drink PBR but why stop there?

MAHFIA CHEF @joolsie cooked up this bad boy for our MAHFIA fam thanksgiving dinner. How does it work you ask? Well you drink half the beer and then you insert the can with the tab side up so it doesn’t spill out. Stick it the oven and cook as normal and the end result is a super juicy, all american, blue ribbon, slightly buzzed, anti-mainstream, american apparel lovin turkey. DELICIOUS!!
